Lake Victoria, named after Queen Victoria, is one of the African Great Lakes. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and is the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. Lake Victoria is shared by 3 countries: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Many mammals live in the Lake Victoria region including hippo, otters, sitatunga, marsh mongoose and more. Crocodiles, turtles and cichlid fish can be found in the lake and seen while exploring the lake. Activities include watersports, fishing and boat cruises.

Getting to Rusinga Island
By Air
The easiest way to get to the island is by plane. There are a number of daily scheduled flights from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Kisumu. It is a 20-minute charter flight from Kisumu or a 35-minute flight from the teeming savannahs of the Masai Mara. The flight from the country’s capital Nairobi takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The airstrip is located on the island, just a short stroll away from the Rusinga Island Lodge.
By Road and Boat
There are a number of daily scheduled flights from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Kisumu. Someone will meet you at the airport and then drive you to the lake. The journey takes 3 hours and passes through some impressive countryside. At the lake, you will catch a ferry to the lodge which takes about 45 minutes.
